Geography's Geospatial Research and Teaching (GReaT) Laboratories opened for use in fall 2008. The GReaT Labs are comprised of a 24-seat teaching classroom (oldJ218) and a 15-seat student-use lab (oldJ219). An comprehensive selection of GIS software is available, including ArcGIS, ENVI, Erdas, Idrisi, PCIGeomatica, TransCAD, Feature Analyst, LiDAR Analyst, MapViewer, Surfer, Grapher, Trimble products, etc. Please see a faculty member for information on what packages are available in which lab. Additional resources such as servers and printers are also available within the labs.
Job Duties & Accomplishments:
- Utilized ESRI suite products
- Assisted students in resolving GIS related problems
- Prepared cartographic aids and reviewed GIS classroom materials
- Monitored GIS computer lab and updated GIS related software
Advanced GIS Internship | START | College Park, MD | Jan 2015 – May 2015
The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (better known as START) is a research and education center at the University of Maryland, College Park focused on the scientific study of the causes and consequences of terrorism in the United States and around the world. It maintains the Global Terrorism Database, which includes over 125,000 terrorist attacks which it describes as the most comprehensive unclassified data base on terrorist events in the world.
Job Duties & Accomplishments:
- Researched and geolocated high value targets into ESRI suite products
- Worked alongside and supported other GIS interns and employees
- Developed GIS models to determine areas vulnerable to illicit border crossings
- Briefed a multi-disciplinary group on projects involving complex GIS terminology
